CREATIVE QUARTERS
Housing to encourage micro-entrepreneurs

Architecture Studio 3: SUPER-DIVERSITY

The housing studio seeks to uncover Singapore's new forms of diversity that has inevitably emerge from the island's connectivity to the wider world. The project aims to develop a mixed-use housing typology for Singapore's budding entrepreneurs, with each quarter designed for different entrepreneurial archetype.

Masterplan: Urban Tributaries

Teaching Team: Calvin Chua (Faculty) | Yun Qing (TA)

Section Members: Valent | Melissa | Zhi Xue | Benji | Megan | Peter | Jonathan | Janalle | Sheryl M | Kai Jie | Sheryl Y | Rae

The project began with a masterplan developed by the section to decide on the vision for the site and the parceling of the land for each pair of students to further develop. The site is located on a hilly terrain in Singapore, with half the land being part of the Clementi Forest, and the other half the Former Mowbray Camp. From the site analysis, four spines that flows across the site are developed.

Urban Spine: Activity strip where amenities and public infrastructure are located

Blue Spine: The unearthed existing canal as part of the flood mitigation strategy

Green Spine: A continuous park that connects the four developments together with greenery and green spaces

Road Spine: The road boundary with different access nodes into the site

Massing Design: Housing for Micro-Entrepreneurs

Project Partner: Melissa

The project aims to develop a mixed-use housing typology for Singapore's budding entrepreneurs, with each quarter designed for different entrepreneurial archetype while responding to the artefacts found on site. The green spine splits the site into two halves, which is then split into quarters. A single datum line is used to create a podium that connects the four housing quarters to provide a space for interaction, promoting super-diversity. The four entrepreneurial archetypes are classified as: Artist-in-Residence, Home Businesses, Makers & Hobbyists, and Tech Startups. The needs of the different archetypes are defined, and a suitable quarter of the site is allocated.
